Overview

  • The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for 10 coastal Andhra Pradesh districts on August 18 and extended orange and red warnings for Mumbai, Pune and Konkan divisions through August 19.
  • Mumbai’s repeated downpours since August 16 have caused waterlogging, dozens of short circuits, tree and wall collapses, local train delays and a fatal landslide in Vikhroli.
  • National Disaster Response Force teams are pre-deployed in Mumbai, high-tide advisories are in effect along the coast and residents in low-lying areas have received evacuation instructions.
  • Mumbai’s seven drinking-water reservoirs have risen to about 90–91% capacity, easing supply concerns but heightening flood risk as releases coincide with peak tides.
  • The low-pressure area is expected to deepen into a depression and cross the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast by August 19, driving peak rainfall over Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat.
