IMD Extends Cold-Wave and Fog Alerts as Central and Western India Register Season Lows

A weak western disturbance from December 13 is forecast to gradually ease the northerly-driven chill.

Overview

  • - The India Meteorological Department kept yellow cold-wave warnings in place across multiple states through December 12–13, with Maharashtra under alerts till Saturday and Telangana expanding its warning to 12 districts for Friday.
  • - Temperatures dipped sharply with Indore at 4.5°C (its lowest in a decade), Pune at 7.9°C, and Telangana sites such as Tiryani (Kumaram Bheem Asifabad) at 5.4°C and Kohir (Sangareddy) at 5.6°C.
  • - Dense-fog alerts were issued for parts of East Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Manipur and other pockets, with advisories for low-beam driving, avoiding peak fog hours and limiting early-morning travel.
  • - Meteorologists cited strong, dry northerly winds, a powerful subtropical jet near 222 km/h and La Niña-linked patterns for enhanced nighttime cooling and widespread single-digit minimums.
  • - Forecasts indicate light rain or snow over the western Himalayas from December 13 and a gradual rise in minimum temperatures thereafter, with Mumbai’s nights near 15–18°C and Bengaluru projected to trend cooler next week.
