IMD Declares Monsoon Withdrawn From Mumbai on Oct. 10

The city’s earliest retreat since 2018 follows forecasts that most of India will see withdrawal by about October 15.

Overview

  • IMD said the Southwest Monsoon also retreated on Friday from remaining parts of Gujarat, some parts of Maharashtra, most parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Bihar.
  • Mumbai is forecast to see dry weather through October 14 after observatories recorded no rainfall since Tuesday.
  • A western disturbance produced brief light rain last weekend, delaying the typical October 8 retreat before conditions turned persistently dry.
  • This season brought an early onset on May 26 and heavy second-half rains, with August nearly double the norm and September topping 600 mm against a 341.4 mm average.
  • The withdrawal fits a two-decade pattern of later exits after the normal date was revised to October 8 in 2020, though this year is the second-earliest since the mid-2000s.
