Overview
- On October 10, the India Meteorological Department declared the southwest monsoon had withdrawn from Mumbai and further retreated from remaining parts of Gujarat, some of Maharashtra, most of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and some of Bihar.
- The exit is Mumbai’s earliest in seven years and the second-earliest since 2006, compared with a typical October 8 withdrawal and last year’s October 15 retreat.
- IMD reported seasonal rainfall surpluses, with about 2,263 mm at Colaba and 3,112 mm at Santacruz after several heavy-rain episodes.
- The season began with a record-early onset on May 26 and saw interruptions to the withdrawal timing from systems including cyclone Shakti and a western disturbance.
- IMD says conditions are favorable for further withdrawal over the next three to four days from remaining parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and across Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and portions of West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha and Telangana.
