IMD Confirms Bay of Bengal Low, Issues Fresh Rain Alerts as Second System Looms

Forecasters expect widespread rain from the present system across eastern and central India, with another low around September 25 likely to intensify into a depression.

Overview

  • A low-pressure area formed over the northeast Bay of Bengal on Monday morning and is moving west-northwest, prompting advisories for heavy rain, thunderstorms and squally winds along the east coast.
  • Odisha faces an orange warning for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj with heavy to very heavy rain and 30–40 kmph gusts, while all 30 districts are forecast to receive rain and coastal winds may reach 40–50 kmph gusting to 60.
  • Mumbai, Thane and Palghar are under a yellow alert for thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rain, with Mumbai reporting waterlogging, fallen trees and short circuits but no casualties, and reservoir storage at about 99 percent.
  • South Bengal is forecast to see heavy rain through midweek in districts including South 24 Parganas and the Medinipurs, with Kolkata likely to get intermittent showers and fishermen advised to avoid rough seas.
  • Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are forecast to see increasing rain and thunderstorms from September 24–27 as the next Bay system develops, with immediate thunderstorm alerts issued for parts of north coastal Andhra and Hyderabad reporting heavy evening rain on Sunday.
