Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested on March 19 and has been imprisoned since then

Overview

  • The first hearing was held Friday at the Silivri prison courthouse west of Istanbul, where spectators applauded and chanted as Ekrem Imamoglu entered.
  • Prosecutors sought between 2½ and 8¾ years in prison plus a ban on political activity over alleged repeated falsification of official documents.
  • Istanbul University revoked his 1995 degree in March over alleged irregularities in a 1990 transfer from a Northern Cyprus institution, and a university diploma is required to run for president.
  • Imamoglu has been jailed since March in a separate corruption probe that prompted Turkey’s largest street protests in more than a decade.
  • The court set the next hearing for October 20, and the opposition mayor still faces several other cases that could also result in a political ban.
