IMA Telangana Joins Opposition to Order Expanding TGMC
The doctors’ body says the move undermines regulatory independence by shifting control away from elected professionals.
Overview
- G.O.Ms.No. 229, issued on December 22 by Health Secretary Christina Z. Chongthu, adds ex-officio officials to the Telangana Medical Council and raises its strength from 25 to 29.
- The ex-officio nominees include the Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare, DME, DPH, TVVP Commissioner, KNRUHS Vice-Chancellor, Aarogyasri CEO, a Health Department secretary, and the NIMS Director.
- IMA Telangana and the Telangana Teaching Government Doctors Association have joined T-SRDA, HRDA, and TJUDA in demanding withdrawal of the order, saying elected doctors would be pushed into a minority.
- Medical groups argue the inclusion of non-medical and IAS officers compromises the council’s autonomy and could weaken recent actions against quackery.
- TJUDA has warned of a statewide strike if the order is not rescinded, and associations have appealed to the National Medical Commission and signaled legal challenges, with no government rollback reported.
