Overview

  • A consent order on June 19 permanently revoked the crematory’s license and bars its owners from operating any crematorium in Illinois.
  • An investigation led by Comptroller Susana Mendoza uncovered bodies stored in broken refrigerated trailers, improvised coolers and stacked on the main crematory floor.
  • State auditors discovered at least 19 bodies from Indiana in an undisclosed trailer, and officials found the crematory accepted new remains after saying it would stop on Feb. 19.
  • The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office received over 500 boxes of ashes and ten intact bodies that had never reached the families of the deceased.
  • A hearing scheduled for June 24 was canceled following the consent order, closing the state’s review without further legal proceedings.
