Illinois Reveals 10 Finalists for Potential New State Flag

Public voting begins in January to select a new design or keep the current flag, with final recommendations due by April 2025.

The Illinois Flag Commission has unveiled 10 finalist designs for a potential new state flag, chosen from nearly 5,000 submissions.
The public will be able to vote online in January to select one of the new designs or retain the current flag, as well as consider two previous historical flags from 1918 and 1968.
Finalist designs incorporate significant state symbols such as Abraham Lincoln, the Monarch butterfly, and elements representing Illinois' agriculture, industry, and natural features.
The Illinois General Assembly will review the commission's recommendations, based on public input, and decide by April 2025 whether to adopt a new flag or retain an existing one.
The initiative aims to create a flag that better reflects Illinois' diverse communities and inspires renewed state pride.
