Overview

  • On August 9, a head-on collision on Illinois Route 26 in Freeport killed 61-year-old Darcy Connolly-Brunner and 30-year-old Rolando Ico-Choc, both pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Stephenson County Sheriff Steven Stovall said investigators are awaiting toxicology results to determine whether Ico-Choc was under the influence when his vehicle crossed the center line.
  • Lawmakers identified Ico-Choc as a Guatemalan national with several prior DUI arrests and an active ICE detainer, a detail first confirmed by Sen. Andrew Chesney at a Tuesday press conference.
  • Senate Bill 1313, filed by Chesney, would roll back key provisions of the 2017 TRUST Act and mandate identification and deportation of undocumented immigrants charged with or convicted of felonies.
  • Governor J.B. Pritzker defended Illinois’ sanctuary policies while stating that violent noncitizens should face imprisonment or deportation to maintain public safety and respect federal-state enforcement roles.
