Overview

  • Mount Prospect police shared Flock Safety license plate reader data with a Texas sheriff’s office in May to locate a woman who had a self-administered abortion, violating Illinois’ 2024 law.
  • State officials uncovered 262 immigration-related searches using Mount Prospect’s data between mid-January and April, contrary to the statute barring such requests.
  • Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has ordered a statewide audit of all license plate reader systems and asked the attorney general to investigate potential further breaches.
  • Flock Safety has revoked access for 46 out-of-state agencies and instituted filters to block any requests linked to abortion or immigration status.
  • Mount Prospect has withdrawn from the Flock Safety network and faces possible loss of state grant funding over the unauthorized data sharing.
