Illinois Man Charged With Threats of Violence Over Posts Targeting Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan

Investigators traced a suspended X account to Illinois after replies to Flanagan’s posts about the Annunciation Church shooting.

Overview

  • Caden Sluder, 22, of Oglesby, Illinois, was charged via warrant in Ramsey County on Wednesday with felony threats of violence.
  • The posts on X responded to Flanagan’s condolence and first-responder messages and included explicit calls for her to be killed, according to the complaint.
  • The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension flagged the threats, traced the account to an Illinois address, and a state trooper reached Sluder on Aug. 27 after which he admitted his identity.
  • Sluder apologized, said the comments were a joke and an exercise of free speech, and told troopers he had no intention of traveling to Minnesota to cause harm.
  • The complaint says he was angry that Christians were killed and referenced Flanagan’s support for transgender youth; Flanagan later posted a video addressing threats, and the charge carries up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
