Illinois Hunter Rescued After Two Nights in Colorado Snowstorm

911 call signals enabled an air search to pinpoint his position.

Overview

  • Officials said the 57-year-old was found in good health on Sept. 24 in the Rawah Wilderness after heavy, wet snow, wind and below-freezing temperatures stalled earlier efforts, and his name was not released.
  • The man became separated from his group on Sept. 22, texted at 3:21 p.m. that he was lost, and was reported missing to authorities around 6:30 p.m.
  • Aircraft were grounded during the storm, then located him around 1 p.m. on Sept. 24 after dispatchers narrowed his position from several 911 calls routed through surrounding centers.
  • He credited staying calm, starting a fire, and using his sleeping bag and clothing to keep warm, and the sheriff’s office said he was well equipped and had military experience.
  • Jackson County authorities thanked 19 partner agencies for the coordinated search, and rescuers framed the successful outcome as especially welcome following recent hunter lightning deaths in southern Colorado.
