- Betting markets list Illinois as a heavy favorite, about 27.5 points with the over/under near 54.5, reflecting expectations that the Illini enter as the stronger team.
- Illinois will start transfer quarterback Katin Houser, who threw roughly 3,300 yards and 19 touchdowns at East Carolina in 2025, while the defense shifts to Bobby Hauck's 3-3-5 alignment.
- UAB begins the season under Alex Mortensen after Trent Dilfer's firing and a major roster overhaul that added dozens of transfers and installed Todd Grantham as defensive coordinator.
- Key things to watch are Illinois' ability to stop a transfer-filled UAB backfield and how the Big Ten's new multi-day injury-reporting rule affects weeklong preparation and player evaluations.
