Illegal ‘Killer’ Child Car Seats Resurface on Major Marketplaces, Which? Warns

Consumer groups are pressing for tougher marketplace duties to stop unsafe products reappearing.

Overview

  • Which? says more than a dozen illegal child seats were listed across eBay, Shein, Little Dreams, ManoMano and Wish.
  • eBay and Shein removed the items after being alerted; Wish says the flagged listings have been taken down, and ManoMano said it removes illegal products on notice.
  • Listings included flimsy, harness‑style products priced at about £12.50–£40, far below legitimate seats that typically start around £80.
  • Many lacked mandatory ECE R44 or R129 certification and basic safety features such as a central harness release, sufficient seat base height and side‑impact protection.
  • A Britax 30 mph test sent a child‑sized dummy through the windscreen, and police seat‑checks found illegal harnesses in use, bolstering calls for stronger rules and enforcement beyond the new Product Regulation and Metrology Act.
