IKEA Shuts Two UK Plan and Order Points to Refine Smaller Store Model

Driven by customer demand for Click and Collect, IKEA is phasing out underperforming sites to test upgraded formats in new locations.

Overview

  • IKEA closed its Aintree Plan and Order Point in Liverpool and its Stockport outlet in Merseyway Shopping Centre on June 16 after identifying service limitations in the smaller formats.
  • The company cited space constraints that prevented returns to physical units and a limited Click and Collect capacity as key factors behind the closures.
  • New Plan and Order Points in Dundee, Hull and York will feature dedicated Click and Collect zones and compact home furnishing sales areas, with the Hull store set to open on June 19.
  • A small-format IKEA is also confirmed for Chester later in 2025 as part of ongoing trials of urban store concepts.
  • The restructuring comes as UK retailers grapple with rising energy and labour costs and a sustained shift toward online shopping.
