IIT Madras Opens Language and Cognition Lab to Advance Research on India’s Linguistic Diversity

Backed by IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation plus Aspire Infolab, the facility begins experimental studies on Indian languages.

Overview

  • Inaugurated on November 10 by Director Prof. V. Kamakoti, the lab is housed in IIT Madras’ Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • IIT Madras says this is the first dedicated facility in India focused on systematic experimental study of linguistic diversity.
  • Initial research uses eye-tracking and reaction-time experiments, with a roadmap to add EEG and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.
  • Current projects examine grammatical voice and copula constructions, with dyslexia studies in Indian children set to follow.
  • The lab will work with IIT Madras’ Centre for Responsible AI to apply AI methods and develop linguistically informed technologies.
