IIT Kanpur PhD Scholar, 25, Dies by Suicide After Jump From Campus Building

Police have opened an inquiry, prompting renewed questions about student mental-health support at the institute.

Overview

  • Kalyanpur police and forensic teams responded to the New SBRA residence, with doctors later declaring the scholar dead at a private hospital and the body sent for post-mortem.
  • The deceased was identified as Ramswroop Ishram (also reported as Ramswaroop Ishwaram), a Department of Earth Sciences scholar who lived with his wife and three-year-old daughter.
  • Deputy Commissioner of Police SM Qasim Abidi said preliminary findings point to prolonged depression with prior counselling, while friends and early inquiries suggested schizophrenia over the past two years.
  • Friends said a physician visit on Monday led to a counsellor referral with a follow-up set for Tuesday evening, which he did not reach before his death.
  • The death follows another student fatality on December 29 and, according to NDTV’s reporting, comes as the IIT system recorded 30 suicides in two years with nine at IIT Kanpur; the institute issued a statement mourning the loss.
