IIT Council Reconvenes After Two Years, Orders AI Curriculum Task Force and One-Month Research Policy Push

Chaired by Dharmendra Pradhan, the meeting prioritized student wellbeing, alumni networks and global ties as it mapped next steps for IITs’ academic and research priorities.

The council is also expected to discuss measures for mental health and wellness, enhancement of merit-cum-means scholarship and pocket allowance for SC and ST students.

Overview

  • The 56th IIT Council met at IIT Delhi, its first session since April 2023, bringing together leaders of all 23 institutes.
  • A task force was set up to draft an action plan for adapting curricula and pedagogy to the rise of artificial intelligence across higher and school education.
  • The Council decided to frame a policy within a month to boost campus-based research and product development, stressing translational work and stronger industry–academia–policy linkages.
  • Members discussed reforms to PhD education, stronger alumni engagement, and expanded international collaborations through the IIT R&D Fair, foreign faculty support and international students.
