IIT Council Backs External Accreditation, Sets 25-Year Roadmap and Near-Term AI, Research Actions

A long-horizon plan now guides IIT reforms, with operational specifics to be finalized in follow-up.

The council is also expected to discuss measures for mental health and wellness, enhancement of merit-cum-means scholarship and pocket allowance for SC and ST students.

Overview

  • Meeting in New Delhi after more than two years, the IIT Council agreed that all IITs will pursue external accreditation, leaving the accrediting body and timeline to be worked out.
  • Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan outlined a 2047 vision to make IITs more inclusive and research-driven and to align their work with national priorities.
  • The Council decided to draft a translational research policy within a month to strengthen industry–academia–policy linkages and accelerate campus-based product development.
  • A task force was constituted to prepare an action plan for integrating artificial intelligence into curricula and pedagogy across higher and school education.
  • Student welfare and inclusivity were emphasized, with directives to promote compassionate engagement, healthy living and annual health check-ups, expand regional-language options, and note that NCrF credit-transfer discussions did not proceed though a framework exists.
