Overview

  • Rohit Sinha, a 22-year-old final-year Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science student from Delhi, fell from the 10th-floor terrace of his IIT Bombay hostel building on August 2.
  • An eyewitness hostel mate, who was on a mobile call at the time, reported seeing Sinha jump, leading investigators to examine a suicide angle.
  • Powai Police registered an accidental death report and have recorded statements from fellow students and teaching staff to clarify the circumstances and motive.
  • Investigators found no suicide note at the scene and have sent the body to Rajawadi Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
  • The case adds to a recent pattern of student suicides at premier Indian technical institutes and follows Supreme Court guidelines issued earlier this year calling for enhanced mental health support.
