IIT Bombay Reverts to 2015 Exam Malpractice Rules

The Senate restored earlier procedures to give accused students a formal chance to explain before discipline and signalled a move to stronger procedural safeguards.

Overview

  • The institute's Senate decided on Wednesday to restore the 2015 exam-malpractice framework so students are allowed to present their side before formal disciplinary action.
  • The July 2026 provision that imposed an FR2 grade and an automatic one‑semester suspension for possession or use of unauthorised devices has been placed under review and is temporarily not being applied.
  • New interim steps require invigilators or faculty to record alleged malpractice in a prescribed form and let students optionally submit a written account that will go to the departmental disciplinary committee.
  • The changes follow protests after the September 18 death of second-year student Sahil Wakode and ongoing inquiries; the Mumbai Crime Branch has recorded about 60 statements, including from invigilator Suryanarayana Doolla.
  • IIT Bombay has set up joint faculty‑student committees to draft clear SOPs that include mentor and wellness-advisor consultation and revised invigilation practices, a shift that could alter how exams and student welfare are handled going forward.
