IIT Bombay Disowns 'We Fool You' Workshop Poster, Cuts Ties With Involved Faculty

The institute has opened an internal investigation after ending collaboration with involved UC Berkeley and UMass-Amherst faculty.

Overview

  • IIT Bombay said it had no prior knowledge of the flyer, ordered its removal from social media, directed that the institute’s name be taken off event materials, and stated no one from the institute will attend.
  • References to IIT Bombay were removed from the workshop site, and the New Political Economy Initiative page took down event details.
  • The flyer adapted the 1911 'Pyramid of Capitalist System' cartoon, depicting Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Yogi Adityanath under 'We Fool You' and placing police and Army under 'We Shoot You'.
  • The two-day workshop was presented as co-organised by UC Berkeley, IIT Bombay, and UMass Amherst, and is scheduled for September 12–13 at UC Berkeley.
  • The poster was first flagged on X by Harshil Mehta, and multiple outlets reported that IIT Bombay’s official account later blocked him.
