IHG Breaks Ground on 817-Key, Triple-Branded Hotel Complex by Universal Studios Japan

Backed by a four-company Sakurajima Kaihatsu consortium, the 2029 opening positions IHG to capture USJ and Yumeshima traffic as transport upgrades expand access.

Overview

  • IHG confirms its biggest new-build in Japan and its first triple-branded project after a groundbreaking in Konohana-ku, with opening targeted for 2029.
  • The complex will total 817 rooms across adjoining InterContinental (244 keys), Kimpton (246) and Holiday Inn Resort (327) hotels.
  • All three properties will be official Universal Studios Japan hotels and are set to be the area’s only internationally branded options at launch.
  • The riverside site in Sakurajima, Osaka, is within easy reach of central Osaka and about 10 minutes by boat or car from the new Yumeshima Integrated Resort.
  • Development is with Sakurajima Kaihatsu LLC, a consortium of Kajima Corporation, Japan Post Real Estate, SMFL MIRAI Partners and Keihanshin Building, with access bolstered by the JR Sakurajima Line extension, new ferry terminals and Kansai Airport’s expanded capacity.
