Iguazú Circuits Closed as Record River Crests Force Partial Park Shutdown

Unusually high flows driven by a strong El Niño are sending a flood wave downstream and officials say restrictions and evacuations will remain under active review.

Overview

  • High upstream rainfall has produced rapid, near-record rises in the Iguazú and Paraná systems and prompted the Parque Nacional Iguazú to close high-exposure routes such as the Circuito Superior, the Tren Ecológico and the Sendero Macuco.
  • Copel reported a peak caudal near 17,700 cubic meters per second at the falls and Puerto Iguazú levels reached about 28 meters, measurements that forced the park to keep the Circuito Inferior and Sendero Verde as the only regularly open circuits.
  • Cross-border river services and local links have been disrupted with 14 fluvial border crossings closed and multiple bridges restricted, cutting transport to Brazil and Paraguay and suspending international boat services at Puerto Iguazú.
  • Provincial authorities have carried out evacuations and relief work, with local tallies showing about 154 people displaced and 124 homes affected in Misiones, while police, Defensa Civil and federal emergency teams maintain assistance operations.
  • Forecasts from hydrology agencies and NOAA indicate a strong El Niño may persist into early 2027 so the crest is expected to travel downstream over days to weeks, raising risks for other Litoral provinces and agricultural areas where cattle and infrastructure are already being moved or protected.
