IGS Süd Closed for Safety, Grades 5–7 Shift to Bockenheim and 8–10 to Villa Süd

City officials plan modular additions at the temporary Bockenheim campus to house all grades until a permanent Länderweg site opens

Overview

  • A June structural assessment found classroom ceilings unable to support required loads, leading Frankfurt’s education department to ban entry to the IGS Süd main building on August 4.
  • Under-grade students (grades 5–7) will start the school year at the former Hessenkolleg in Bockenheim with a dedicated shuttle, while grades 8–10 remain at the statically sound Villa Süd in Sachsenhausen.
  • Modular classroom units are scheduled for installation at the Bockenheim site, allowing the full student body to consolidate there through 2028 before relocating to the Länderweg facility.
  • Originally slated for renovation in 2019, the IGS Süd project was repeatedly delayed, reflecting a broader backlog of maintenance and safety upgrades across Frankfurt’s historic school buildings.
  • To free up the Bockenheim building, the Hessenkolleg is moving into the Bildungszentrum Ostend with the Abendgymnasium and Volkshochschule, exemplifying coordinated city-state facility swaps.
