iFixit Teardown Points to Shared Battery Between iPhone Air and Its MagSafe Pack

Wireless charging losses limit the accessory’s output to roughly 65% even with a 12.26Wh, 2.72mm cell.

Overview

  • iFixit opened Apple’s iPhone Air–only MagSafe Battery and found a steel-encased cell whose unusual shape closely matches the battery shown inside the iPhone Air at launch.
  • The internal cell measures 12.26 watt-hours and 2.72mm thick, a size thin enough to fit within the iPhone Air’s 5.6mm chassis.
  • Despite the slim cell, the pack is about 7.64mm thick due to its plastic enclosure, MagSafe coil, and electronics, and it lacks the iPhone Air’s titanium reinforcement.
  • iFixit documented an adhesive-release feature that frees the battery by applying 12 volts to contact points, enabling cleaner removal than typical pull tabs.
  • Apple has not confirmed that the accessory uses the same battery as the phone, and coverage notes that reuse could streamline production and reduce costs if true.
