iFixit: M5 MacBook Pro Scores 4/10 for Repairability

Minor repairability gains do little to offset a design that keeps batteries and other parts hard to service.

Overview

  • Apple published day-one repair guides, which direct technicians to disconnect the Battery Management System cable first to cut power.
  • Battery service remains complex because Apple sells the pack preinstalled in the top-case assembly, effectively forcing a near-complete transplant for replacements.
  • A small design change brings the central battery pull tabs within reach without removing the trackpad, easing part of the process.
  • Many modular parts, including fans and ports, sit beneath the logic board, and display swaps still require removing an antenna bracket and multiple tiny P2 screws.
  • iFixit measured a 72.6 Wh battery, slightly above Apple’s listed 72.4 Wh, underscoring minor but notable internal changes.
