Overview
- The IEC says it will not grant any party or independent candidate extra time to capture nominations after the official 17:00 deadline on 28 August.
- The ANC says most of its candidates were lodged on time but that a small number of entries hit technical problems in the IEC’s online nomination system and are being finalised with the commission.
- The IEC maintains its online system was available throughout the nomination period and questioned why the ANC submitted many names at the last minute.
- If the outstanding lists are not accepted, the ANC risks being barred from municipal races where nominations missed the cut-off, creating immediate political and electoral consequences.
- The commission has pointed to the National Political Liaison Committee as the forum for resolving nomination issues and will provide a full briefing on the nomination outcome and next steps on 2 September.
