IDF Chief Admits Systemic Oct. 7 Failure, Removes and Censures Senior Officers

The announcement coincides with regional tensions heightened by an Israeli strike in Beirut that killed a senior Hezbollah commander.

Overview

  • Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said the army suffered a “severe, resounding, systemic failure” on October 7 and unveiled personal sanctions following an expert committee’s findings.
  • Former chiefs Aharon Haliva (military intelligence), Oded Basiuk (operations), Yaron Finkelman (southern command), and Brig. Gen. Yossi Sariel (Unit 8200) were removed from reserve duty, alongside other former Gaza-front commanders.
  • Current leaders received formal censures, including intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Shlomo Binder, Air Force chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, and Navy chief Vice Adm. David Sa’ar Salama, who will remain in their posts until their terms end.
  • The measures mark the most significant military accountability steps to date as large protests press for a state commission of inquiry that the government has not created.
  • Separately, Israel said it conducted a precise strike in Beirut’s Dahiyeh that killed Hezbollah commander Haytham Ali Tabatabai; Lebanese authorities reported at least five dead and 28 wounded, Iran and others issued condemnations, and U.S. officials said they were notified after the strike.
