Idaho Springs Hit-and-Run Suspect Arrested After Officer Injured, Patrol Car Rammed

Deputies used stop sticks after a Safeway parking lot crash escalated into a highway pursuit that left one officer with minor injuries.

  • Clear Creek County deputies arrested Aaron Family, 43, around 3:15 p.m. Saturday after stop sticks and a crash near West Dumont and Stanley roads.
  • The case started around noon when a parked car was hit at the Idaho Springs Safeway, and authorities later issued a shelter-in-place for Lawson and Dumont during the search.
  • During a traffic stop, the driver reversed and knocked an officer down; the officer was taken to a hospital as a precaution and is expected to be OK.
  • On eastbound I-70 near mile marker 236, the suspect allegedly pushed a sheriff’s vehicle into the center barrier before exiting at Fall River Road.
  • He was booked on counts including first- and second-degree assault on a peace officer, felony eluding, resisting arrest, DUI, and hit-and-run.
