Idaho Police Release Knife-Sheath Photos, 2,300-Page File in Kohberger Case

The newly released records show how DNA from the sheath was turned through genetic genealogy into the lead that identified the suspect.

Overview

  • Idaho State Police published the first public images of the Ka-Bar knife sheath recovered at the University of Idaho crime scene.
  • The disclosure spans more than 2,300 pages and includes investigators’ handwritten notes, lab reports, and crime-scene photographs.
  • Forensic testing found DNA on the sheath snap that investigative genetic genealogists used to generate a tip pointing to Bryan Kohberger.
  • Authorities arrested Kohberger at his parents’ home in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, on December 30, 2022, after developing the lead.
  • Records also document testing of victims’ nail clippings and samples from Kohberger’s Hyundai Elantra, and note a sliding door was left open for a dog found unharmed.
