IDAC Chief Defends Mandate in Parliament, Reports Death Threat Over SAPS Corruption Cases

Andrea Johnson told lawmakers the directorate is operating squarely within its brief to pursue complex corruption in the police service.

Overview

  • Johnson outlined IDAC’s probe of the R360 million Medicare24 Tshwane tender, saying judges granted cyber and search warrants and downloads of Vusi “Cat” Matlala’s seized phones showed data gaps consistent with deletion.
  • She said several politicians and SAPS officials are implicated in the tender investigation but declined to name suspects when pressed by Julius Malema about Senzo Mchunu and Bheki Cele.
  • Johnson disputed KwaZulu-Natal commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s suggestion that an IDAC investigator was blocked from crime intelligence access, saying the investigator coordinated directly with him and he facilitated assistance.
  • On the June 28 arrest of crime intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo and six co‑accused, Johnson argued the case fits IDAC’s mandate to tackle serious corruption tied to irregular appointments, with all the accused currently out on bail.
  • She said she received a threat warning her team had gone too far, rejected claims she gets tip‑offs from her husband in crime intelligence, and noted MP Fadiel Adams approached IDAC about Khumalo after reporting SAPS did not act.
