Icy Roads Across Germany Kill Several as DWD Keeps Warnings in Place

Officials urge caution with black ice expected to linger into Monday in many regions.

  • In Saxony near Zwönitz, a 43-year-old driver skidded into oncoming traffic and later died in hospital, and his 31-year-old passenger suffered life-threatening injuries after both were thrown from the car.
  • Other fatal incidents included a 61-year-old who slid off the road and hit a tree in the Salzlandkreis and a 22-year-old who died in a burning vehicle after a crash in Melle, with a separate pedestrian death reported on the B29 near Weinstadt.
  • Police logged heavy collision totals in several states, including 90 ice-related crashes across Schleswig-Holstein and ten non-injury wrecks on the A1 recorded by the Autobahnpolizei Ahlhorn.
  • Serious and minor injuries were reported in additional crashes, including a 32-year-old trapped and badly hurt after hitting a tree in Vorpommern-Greifswald and a police officer lightly injured at a B9 crash scene in Rhineland-Palatinate.
