ICT Student Found Dead in Matunga Hostel

An accidental death report has been registered pending a post-mortem to confirm the cause.

Overview

  • Multiple outlets identified the student as 19-year-old Siddhesh Patil and said he was found unconscious in his room on the second floor of Hostel 5 and later declared dead at Sion Hospital after friends attempted CPR.
  • Reports say Patil messaged his psychiatrist late on Tuesday expressing suicidal thoughts, the doctor alerted his family, and hostel friends were asked to check on him before he was discovered.
  • Matunga police have registered an Accidental Death Report, are recording statements from family and classmates, and say they are awaiting a post-mortem to establish the exact cause of death.
  • ICT officials say campus counselling services are available and the vice-chancellor noted the student had been consulting an external doctor since 2023 and had not sought on-campus counselling.
  • The case has renewed attention on student mental-health systems at elite campuses after recent suicides, including the September death at IIT Bombay, and could increase calls for stronger, more accessible support and independent reviews.
