ICON Aircraft Cofounder Kirk Hawkins, 58, Dies in Swiss Alps Wingsuit Crash

Swiss authorities have opened an inquiry into the fatal flight near the Eiger.

Overview

  • Swiss police said Hawkins jumped from a helicopter with three other wingsuit flyers along the Eiger’s east ridge on Aug. 19.
  • He collided with trees west of Schüssellouwinegraben and died at the scene, according to authorities.
  • Local police confirmed an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the crash.
  • Co-founder Steen Strand announced the death in a public tribute, calling Hawkins “the most extraordinary person” he had known.
  • Hawkins co-founded ICON in 2006, led the A5 seaplane’s launch, left as CEO in 2018, and remained a party to ICON’s 2024 Delaware bankruptcy case after asset sales and settlements that excluded him; earlier A5 crashes were attributed by investigators to pilot error, not design faults.
