ICO Advises Police Route in Your Party Membership Dispute

The regulator declined a formal probe, saying any potential criminality should be assessed by police.

Overview

  • Jeremy Corbyn’s Peace and Justice Project, the data controller for Your Party’s list, referred the case to the ICO after an unauthorised membership portal launched in September.
  • An email to roughly 800,000 contacts invited £55 sign-ups, which Corbyn called a false membership system set up without approval.
  • The ICO said formal involvement is not required at this time and advised considering referrals to police and Action Fraud.
  • No referral to police had been made as of Friday, with legal advice being sought on next steps and no investigation underway.
  • Zarah Sultana said on X that she had been informed the ICO had dropped the case and expressed confidence that no further action would follow.
