ICMR Launches NAKSHATRA HPC Facility to Strengthen Genomic Surveillance
Serving five ICMR institutes, the Pune facility streamlines genomic sequencing to accelerate detection of emerging pathogens
Overview
- NAKSHATRA is now operational at ICMR-NIV Pune and will initially serve five ICMR institutes as a central repository for sequencing data, with plans to extend support to Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratories.
- The high-performance computing cluster comprises 12 compute nodes with 700 processor cores and one petabyte of storage to support complex bioinformatics workflows.
- Researchers can complete analyses that once took weeks or months within 24 to 48 hours, enabling faster identification of new disease threats.
- Developed under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, the facility forms the cornerstone of the High Performance Computing Next Generation Sequencing Hub project.
- By enhancing data processing speed and capacity, NAKSHATRA bolsters India’s pandemic preparedness and accelerates AI-driven vaccine and drug development.
