ICJ to Rule on South Africa's Genocide Accusation Against Israel
Israel Presents Declassified Documents to Rebut Charges, as Israeli Cabinet Convenes Crisis Meeting Ahead of Decision
- The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to deliver a ruling on the complaint submitted by South Africa accusing Israel of carrying out genocide in Gaza.
- South Africa has requested nine urgent orders known as provisional measures, primarily for the court to order Israel to “immediately suspend its military operations in and against Gaza.”
- Israel has presented more than 30 declassified documents to the ICJ, including some authorizing humanitarian aid into Gaza, to rebut the charges of genocidal intent.
- The ICJ's orders are binding, but the UN does not have the capacity to enforce them.
- The Israeli cabinet has convened a crisis meeting to anticipate possible scenarios before the ICJ's decision.
