Overview
- Gov. Jeff Landry, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan and Attorney General Pam Bondi unveiled Camp 57, also called Louisiana Lockup, inside a repaired solitary-confinement unit at Angola that was shuttered in 2018.
- ICE has transferred 51 immigrants to the site, and a DHS list shared with reporters says many have convictions for murder, rape or sexual offenses against minors.
- Landry said the facility will scale to more than 400 beds within the next few months.
- Noem highlighted Angola’s notoriety as a deterrent and urged use of DHS self-deportation tools.
- The opening is part of a wider state-federal detention expansion that includes Florida’s Alligator Alcatraz, which an appeals court allowed to remain open, and new sites in Indiana and Nebraska, while advocates point to Angola’s abusive history and a 2023 court finding of cruel medical care.
