ICE Reverses Key Detail in Glen Burnie Shooting After Police Dispute

The agency now says the second injured man was already in federal custody when agents opened fire.

Overview

  • Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said Solomon Serrano-Esquivel was in ICE custody inside an ICE vehicle when he was injured, reversing earlier claims he was a passenger in the targeted van.
  • ICE maintains that three agents fired at driver Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins after he rammed ICE vehicles and drove at officers, and two people were taken to Shock Trauma while no agents were hurt.
  • Anne Arundel County Police are leading the shooting investigation, the FBI is examining the alleged assault on agents, and ICE has opened an internal review.
  • Images ICE posted on Dec. 24 showed a bullet hole in the passenger side of the van’s windshield, and a bystander video reviewed by The Banner showed only the driver pulled from the van with no visible passenger.
  • ICE’s detainee locator lists Sousa-Martins at Caroline Detention Facility, Serrano-Esquivel does not appear in the database, and county detectives have interviewed both injured men.
