Overview

  • Bollinger Shipyards has joined Finnish Rauma Shipyards, engineering firm Aker Arctic and Canadian Seaspan Shipyards in an ICE Pact consortium vying for the US Coast Guard’s medium Arctic Security Cutter contract.
  • The partnership plans to construct the first cutter hull at Rauma’s Finnish yard before transitioning production to US facilities, targeting delivery within 36 months of contract award.
  • The Seaspan-Aker Multi-Purpose Icebreaker design at the core of the bid can break up to four feet of ice, sail 12,000 nautical miles and displace about 9,000 tons.
  • Project funding is secured by a $5 billion allocation for medium and Great Lakes icebreakers in the recently passed reconciliation bill, part of a broader $14.6 billion boost for Coast Guard cutter acquisitions.
  • Canada’s Davie Shipbuilding, which owns Helsinki Shipyard and is developing a Polar-class design, remains a key rival in the Arctic Security Cutter competition.
