Ice Fishing Tragedy in New York: One Brother Dies, Another Survives

Unsafe ice conditions lead to fatal accident, marking the second such incident in the U.S. within a week.

Two brothers, aged 41 and 42, fell into an icy pond while ice fishing in Burlington, New York on January 6, 2024.
A passerby walking his dog alerted authorities, and Forest Ranger Nate Laymon was able to rescue the older brother who was suffering from hypothermia.
The younger brother was found submerged in 7 to 8 feet of water and was later declared deceased at the hospital.
The ice on the pond was approximately one inch thick, which is considered unsafe for fishing.
This incident occurred a day after two young brothers, aged 6 and 8, fell through the ice of a retention pond in Wisconsin and later died.
