Overview

  • Ábrego was taken into custody Monday when he reported to the ICE field office in Baltimore, three days after his release from a Tennessee jail.
  • After his lawyers filed a new case in federal court, a general order automatically paused deportations for two days for Maryland detainees who are contesting detention.
  • ICE has notified counsel it intends to deport him to Uganda under a 72-hour notice protocol, citing a recent policy and Uganda’s agreement to accept certain U.S. deportees.
  • Defense filings say the government offered to relocate him to Costa Rica only if he pleaded guilty and remained in custody, and included a letter from Costa Rica welcoming him without detention.
  • Ábrego has pleaded not guilty to federal human-trafficking charges stemming from a 2022 Tennessee stop; DOJ says he is a clear danger and will be held accountable, while the defense seeks dismissal as a vindictive prosecution.
