BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - AUGUST 25: Kilmar Abrego Garcia (C) and his wife Jennifer Vasquez Sura (Center Right) enter a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office on August 25, 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland. The U.S. Government is threatening to deport Garcia, a Maryland construction worker from El Salvador, to Uganda after he rejected a plea deal to be charged with Human Smuggling and deported to Costa Rica. Earlier this year Garcia was wrongfully deported to a notorious anti-terrorism prison CECOT in El Salvador. (Photo by Andrew Harnik/Getty Images)

Overview

  • Abrego Garcia was taken into custody after reporting for a required check-in at ICE’s Baltimore field office, his attorneys said.
  • Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said agents are processing him for deportation to Uganda, a country where he has no known ties.
  • U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis and a standing Maryland order paused any immediate removal pending a hearing, according to court filings and media reports.
  • ICE notified counsel by email that DHS may remove him to Uganda no earlier than 72 hours after the notice, and his lawyers filed a new habeas petition in Maryland.
  • Prosecutors earlier offered removal to Costa Rica if he pleaded guilty to human-smuggling charges he denies; he remains indicted in Tennessee and has pleaded not guilty.
