ICE Arrests Colombian Teen and Family After Probation in Fatal Aurora Crash

Taken into ICE custody May 20, he faces an immigration hearing that does not shield him from detention despite his pending asylum claim.

The 16-year-old undocumented immigrant from Colombia had been sentenced to probation and community service in connection with the July 2024 death of 24-year-old Kaitlyn Weaver in Aurora.

Overview

  • ICE confirmed that the 16-year-old undocumented Colombian and his relatives were arrested on May 20 and will remain in custody pending an immigration hearing.
  • Last July in Aurora, Colorado, the teenager drove around 90 mph in an uninsured vehicle with other minors before T-boning Kaitlyn Weaver’s car and killing the 24-year-old rehab center worker.
  • Under a plea deal approved by Arapahoe County prosecutors, he received probation and community service rather than a prison term for vehicular homicide.
  • ICE’s Denver field office publicly criticized the district attorney’s office for the lenient sentence granted to a criminal immigrant convicted of reckless driving resulting in death.
  • According to ICE, the teen’s pending asylum application does not prevent his detention or removal proceedings under federal immigration law.
