ICE Agents Open Fire on Van in Glen Burnie, Two Hospitalized

Multiple investigations are underway following ICE’s characterization of the gunfire as defensive.

Overview

  • Anne Arundel County police said ICE officers approached a white van during a targeted operation around 10:50–11 a.m. in the Parke West neighborhood when the driver allegedly tried to run them over.
  • Federal officials identified the men as Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins of Portugal, who was shot, and passenger Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel of El Salvador, who was injured in the crash; both are in stable condition.
  • ICE and DHS said Sousa-Martins ignored commands, rammed agency vehicles, then drove directly at officers before agents fired; no ICE personnel were severely injured.
  • The Anne Arundel County Police Department is leading the shooting investigation, the FBI is probing the alleged assault on federal agents, and ICE is conducting an internal review.
  • Neighbors reported a brief chase and hearing three gunshots, and recent reporting noted several immigration-enforcement shootings this year involving vehicles in similar confrontations.
