ICC Sets LA28 Qualification Roadmap, Gives USA Cricket Three-Month Reprieve

The newly formed working group will establish regional T20 qualification rules for the 2028 Olympics ahead of final approvals.

Overview

  • The ICC Board appointed a working group to recommend regional ranking-based T20 qualification criteria for LA28 and to explore format reforms including a two-tier Test structure.
  • Cut-off dates for regional T20 rankings will decide five of six men’s slots at the 2028 Los Angeles Games with direct entries for Asia, Oceania, Europe, Africa and host USA, and the final berth to be determined by a qualifier.
  • USA Cricket avoided immediate suspension after securing a three-month extension to carry out comprehensive governance reforms, including the conduct of free and fair elections.
  • England and Wales Cricket Board secured hosting rights for the next three World Test Championship finals through 2031, while Timor-Leste and Zambia were admitted as associate members, raising ICC membership to 110.
  • The ICC, in partnership with the BCCI, ECB and Cricket Australia, launched structured support programmes offering high-performance training and domestic playing opportunities for exiled Afghan women cricketers.
