ICC Sets LA28 Cricket Qualifiers for January–February 2028

The move compresses the lead-up to the Games, making the host women's place contingent on the inaugural 2027 Women's Champions Trophy standings.

Overview

  • On Friday, October 23, 2026, the ICC circulated a global events list that fixes the men's and women's Olympic qualifying tournaments for January and February 2028.
  • The ICC revised the host reallocation rule so that if the USA women's team does not reach the top 15 of the T20I rankings in the June 30–December 31, 2026 window, the extra Olympic berth will be awarded by the Women's Champions Trophy standings with a March 1, 2027 cut-off.
  • Each qualifier will feature eight teams selected by the ICC as the seven highest-ranked non-automatic qualifiers plus the Caribbean Regional Qualifier winner, while the Olympic tournaments themselves will each include six teams.
  • Direct qualification is partly settled for women with Australia, India, South Africa and Great Britain already confirmed, and the men's continental direct slots will be allocated from T20I rankings on December 31, 2026.
  • Key logistics remain unresolved because venues for the qualifiers are not finalised, the January–February timing leaves under six months before LA28 for final preparations, and the calendar also places back-to-back 2028 T20 World Cups and the 2029 World Test Championship final in England on June 8–12, 2029.
