ICC Probes El-Fasher Atrocities as Famine Declared and Flight Spreads Into Kordofan

International pressure for a ceasefire is mounting following the RSF takeover.

Overview

  • The ICC prosecutor’s office said it is taking immediate steps to preserve and collect evidence from El-Fasher and warned the reported killings and rapes may constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity.
  • The IPC confirmed famine in El-Fasher and in Kadugli in South Kordofan, with 20 additional areas across Darfur and Kordofan at risk and millions facing extreme hunger.
  • The IOM reported 36,825 people fled five North Kordofan localities between October 26 and 31, while UN agencies say more than 70,000 have fled El-Fasher and many others remain trapped with little access to food, water or medical care.
  • After seizing El-Fasher, the RSF consolidated control over Darfur and is massing toward El-Obeid, claiming control of Bara, as the UN warns Kordofan is likely the next major arena of fighting.
  • Pope Leo XIV and the foreign ministers of Germany, Jordan and the UK called for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian corridors, and the Red Cross chief said “history is repeating” following reports of mass killings and attacks on health facilities.
